World Book Day 2023

Lesson: English

Class: Year 3 Year: 2022 - 2023

Year 3 had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day. Across the school, we decided our focus for the day would be on the novel 'The Snail and The Whale' by Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler.

As the children came into Year 3 in the morning, they activities started by  creating a whale or snail hat which they could wear for the day if they wished. We then read the story together and they asked lots of questions about the story. Some children had read the story before and liked it. The children then split into groups and created a role play of a certain part of the story (of their choice). They absolutely loved doing this and worked so well as a group. They performed their role play/drama activity infront of the rest of the class. We went into the hall to do some activities on Julia Donaldson books with Year 6: drawing like an illustrator, sharing stories together and matching up book titles and their illustrations.  After break, we watched the story and then picked a part of the story that we would pretend we were in as the whale or the snail. The children then wrote their own postcards to someone of their choice talking about their journey as the snail or the whale and all of the facinating things they had seen along the way. In the afternoon, the whole school had an assembly in the hall and showcased what they had done throughout the day. it was lovely to see that each class had equally had a fantastic day.
