St. John's CE School Football Teams 2018/19

Here you can find information about our football teams and how they are performing this year!  We are part of the Southport Leagues (Girls and Boys have separate leagues) and play a number of fixtures throughout the year in addition to regular tournaments hosted by the likes of Everton and Liverpool up at Stanley High School!

Monday 1st October 2018

On a typical October Monday afternoon, the boys set out to play their first fixtures at Stanley High School. It was a tough start to the season for St John’s football team but we battled hard and managed to score our first two goals. Despite some narrow losses, the boys had enormous fun and learned a good deal too. Our first match against Churchtown proved to be difficult playing against the wind for the entirety of the game but that didn’t appear to discourage the squad. The boys moved the ball around well which saw them create plenty of chances but unfortunately, we suffered a 1-0 defeat. In our second match against Larkfield, Luke (Y4) released his inner Mo Salah, scoring an incredible goal from the half way line which fuelled the fire for a dramatic first half. The second half saw a few unlucky goals but we continued to play skilfully and tactically. Our third and final match against BDS was our toughest and most eventful yet; after a long time coming, Marley (Y4) managed to knock in a beautiful goal. The sportsmanship and behaviour of the boys was impeccable, well done all. A huge thank you to Miss Lovelock and Mr Thomas for stepping into management and to a lot of unfamiliar faces in the team who stepped in with Year 6 being away on their residential and parties and illness affecting Year 5! Well done!

Thursday 11th October 2018

Our first girls tournament went down a storm (literally)! Playing in torrential rain, the Y5/6 team displayed an outstanding performance at Stanley High School on Thursday competing against 6 other schools in the league. Our enthusiasm throughout meant we celebrated three victories, one draw and two losses. Despite playing in difficult conditions, St John’s walked away beaming with pride and ready for a hot bath. 2 goals from Lottie, 1 each from Sadie and Alice, great goalkeeping from all who shared the duty and wonderful enthusiasm from the whole team. An absolute delight for us to take to Stanley!

Friday 12th October 2018

Our first league match of the season saw the girls take on Birkdale on a slightly drier evening up at Stanley – though still windy. The match was extremely competitive between two fairly well matched sides but Birkdale were exceedingly quick on the break and eventually won 4-0. Well done to the whole team for their enthusiasm and perseverance – we are looking forward to the next match already!

Thursday 1st November 2018

We have got there in the end! A huge thank you must go to Mr and Mrs Horton for their incredibly kind offer of sponsoring a new football kit. We have had a few teething problems along the way (including companies not checking spellings before they press print!) but we were finally able to give the kit a debut last night at the second league evening at Stanley High. And what a debut it was! A 2-0 defeat against a very good Marshside team followed by a 1-0 win against St. Patrick’s with a fantastic team performance and a fine goal from Luca! Brilliant! Good luck to the girls tonight as they continue their league game against OLOL Primary School

Friday 2nd November 2018

The girls played an exciting match against OLOL Primary School last Friday. Unfortunately we were defeated in both games but we certainly put up a good fight! The enthusiasm from the girls was outstanding as usual and we saw two excellent goals scored by Emma. A big thank you to Lily’s dad for sharing his expertise at training and to everyone who came to support the team. Well done girls!

Wednesday 23rd January 2019

On Wednesday St. John’s participated in the Southport Schools 5-a-side tournament indoors at Stanley High. 16 teams across Southport playing matches across 4 evenings – our group saw us matched up against OLOL ‘A’, Linaker and Farnborough ‘C’, all significantly bigger than us…

The night started brightly with a 2-0 victory against Farnborough ‘C’ with Jack scoring both goals. We also finished strongly beating Linaker 4-1 after falling behind early.  Worse nearly occurred with a penalty to the opposition but fortunately, George stepped up with a fantastic save and then thankfully, a goal from Jack and a hat-trick from Luca contributed to a fabulous comeback and we hope Luca remembers his feat for a long, long time!  Our middle game against OLOL ‘A’ was always predicted to be the hardest and it turned out this way with St. John’s slipping to a 2-0 defeat. Still, 2 wins out of 3 against massively bigger schools meant that we left Stanley very proud of our achievements and chomping at the bit for the outdoor season to begin again. Thanks to all the boys and the supporters who were very glad we were indoors!
